Gothenburg strategy

The Gothenburg strategy was adopted in June 2001. Regarded as the "third pillar" of the Lisbon Process, the other two being economic and social reform, the Gothenburg strategy focuses on a new emphasis to protect the environment and achieve a more sustainable pattern of development. The strategy focuses on combating climate change, ensuring sustainable transport, addressing threats to public health, and managing natural resources in a more responsible manner. In June 2006 the European Council adopted a renewed Sustainable Development Strategy for the enlarged EU, building on the Gothenburg strategy for sustainable development. Projects that are implemented within the South Baltic Programme have to refer and contribute to the Gothenburg Strategy.
