Offshore wind energy creates opportunities for the tourism sector in the South Baltic Region
In the context of the project “South Baltic OFF.E.R”, the German Offshore Wind Energy Foundation conducted a study on the potential benefits of offshore wind energy for the tourism sector.

Titled “The Impact of Offshore Wind Energy on Tourism – Good Practices and Perspectives for the South Baltic Region”, the study investigates how offshore wind farms can be integrated into regional tourism concepts by looking at real-world examples from the North Sea and Baltic areas. The conclusions are based on extensive research and the analysis of discussions held with project partners and other relevant sources, as well as telephone interviews with experts.

Especially in the coastal areas of Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Great Britain, offshore wind farms are already consciously being integrated into regional tourism offers. The spectrum of potential offshore attractions is large, including offshore information centres and travelling exhibitions, boat tours and helicopter flights around offshore wind farms, observation platforms with telescopes, combined on and offshore tours, offshore restaurants, merchandising products.

The study examines how offshore wind energy and tourism may be of mutual benefit to each other, and in this context offers approaches for successful communication. It is essential for wind farm operators and businesses to pursue an optimal communication strategy, before, during and after the construction of a wind farm, which centres on a proactive information policy regarding planned developments, since a lack of information is frequently the greatest obstacle to acceptance of this
young technology. This of course applies not only to tourists visiting the affected coastal regions, but especially to local residents.

“During our discussions with local actors it became clear that transparent
communication and on-site activities would not only raise the level of acceptance for a wind farm project among tourists, but could give rise to a certain pride for being part of such a project, particularly among local inhabitants,” explains Andreas Wagner, managing director of the German Offshore Wind Energy Foundation.
