Rural ridesharing schemes awarded in Germany
The offspring of the South Baltic project Mobile Together in Kröpelin and Bützow honoured in Stralsund and Berlin

The Kröpelin-based NGO de DROM e.V.,  which is behind the rural ridesharing platform wir-fahren-zusammen.de,  was awarded with the second prize of the contest  “Sustainably mobile – everybody can?”. The contest was an effort of the Ministry of Energy, Infrastructure and Regional Development of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to acknowledge innovative concepts for sustainable mobility in the region. An expert panel has been formed to scrutinise 36 applications in terms of CO2 reduction, innovation, role model capability and transferability. Based on this, the jury rewarded the most creative and efficient initiatives which seek to popularise alternative and sustainable mobility in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

“With this competition, we look for ideas that encourage climate protection efforts in the field of mobility in our region. Public energy debates tend to focus on electricity only. A paradigm shift in the energy sector is a shift in electricity, heating and notably mobility policy and practice. Both the number and quality of submitted ideas show me that we have struck a chord. Innovative ideas exist already in our region, and this is impressive.” said  the Infrastructure Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Christian Pegel.

Amalgamating good practice from Sweden, Norway and Germany, the South Baltic project Mobile Together seeks to increase the sustainable accessibility of rural South Baltic areas by introducing different concepts of ridesharing. The chairman of de DROM  e.V. Hubertus Wunschik reported about the plans to further develop the ridesharing platform wir-fahren-zusammen.de   –  an offspring of Mobile Together – integrating complementary information provided by the regional public transport operators. The goal is to maintain a durable multimodal trip planning service ensuing seamless and environmentally sustainable connectivity for their fellow citizens.

Along with the goal to respond to the commuting and occasional travel demands from and to rural areas in a sustainable manner, Mobile Together is also a community building effort helping locals to socialise and exchange. Bützow is the second community in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern testing the cross-border ridesharing scheme. The local project partner Pferdemarktquartier e.V. was one of nine initiatives awarded by Germany’s Federal Minister of Environment Barbara Hendricks for their commitment in rural areas.

The contest “People and Successes”  was introduced in 2011 by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety to reward rural development initiatives. Pferdemarktquartier e.V. is one of the 2014 award winners in the category  “Culture and encounters in new spaces”. Social encounters in carpooling vehicles as a result of Mobile Together was one of Bützow’s creditable efforts to strengthen the local sense of community.

The award ceremonies took place in Stralsund  (regional contest “Sustainably mobile – everybody can?”) and in Berlin (Federal contest “People and Successes”).
